Enemas have been around a long time.   While they are invasive, home enemas do not put drugs or controlled substances into your body.

Many of today's common health problems can be traced to digestive problems, particualarly that of the colon, or large intestine.   This organ is designed to remove fluids from body waste before voiding them.   However, our high fat, low fiber diets tend to acutally clog up the colon, keeping it from passing out the food wastes. The longer this waste stays in the body the more toxic and encrusted it becomes. Our bodies are being poisoned because the moisture that is absorbed from the colon has to pass through this toxic waste that has attached itself to the lining of the colon. This toxified moisture is then distributed throughout the body poisoning our vital organs and deteriorating the body's own immune system. The resulting toxemia can become a chronic condition,  but for most of us it means constipation, sinus problems, allergies, chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritis, migraine headaches, immune related illnesses, colds, flu, etc. Also the risk of colon cancer seems to be increasing everyday with no known cause or cure. Doesn't it make sense that meat and other waste that has been trapped inside your colon for years could become so rotten, putrid, and toxic that it begins to slowly poison your organs and your entire body, possibly even causing colon cancer?

Enemas and colonics are methods to remove this putrid waste to help the body function normally again.  A colonic is the gentle, thorough cleaning of the colon.  An enema can have many purpose, but it is generally where a fluid is introduced through the anus to fill the colon, loosening and cleaning. It also distends the colon and rectum, thereby easing the epmtying of the bowel.  Enemas can be given for consitpation or for various medical procedures.

During the administration of the enema, you will be asked to lie on your left side, with the right leg flexed.  This position will enable the enema solution to flow easily into the colon.
The solution most commonly used is a mixture of mild soap and approximately a liter or two of warm water that is placed in a plastic container with a flexible tube. The tube end will be lubricated and inserted into the rectum about 4 to 6 inches, after which the soap solution will be slowly administered.  Injecting the solution slowly helps to minimize discomfort.

It is also helpful to breathe slowly and deeply through the mouth to help minimize discomfort and enable you to take the enema more easily. If you experience cramps, you need to let the nurse know so that the flow of the solution can be slowed or stopped momentarily to make you more comfortable. Once the enema is administered, you will probably feel the need to move your bowels. If possible, wait about 3 minutes to give the best results.

Before  a proctoscopic examination or various x-ray procedures, a fluid such as a barium solution (barium sulfate) is used to allow tha colon walls to show up on the X-Ray.  A Fleet enema is first given to clean out the colon.   Then the barium enema is given.  Air is also injected past the rectum to inflate the colon, making it easier for the physician to observe the intestinal walls.   The barium itself is not too uncomfortable.  However, the air coupled with the lenght of time it takes to do the X-Rays, during which the patient cannot void, makes this an extremely unpleasant and uncomfortable procedure.  When President Reagan had a barium enema and was asked by reporters how it felt, his slight smile and statement that it was "a little uncomfortable" brought knowing smiles of kinship from the 1,000,000 other Americans who had also undergone the procedure.

On a lighter note, a military officer getting his barium enema at Bethesda Naval Hospital, the same place as Reagan received his, stated that the pain and discomfort were almost worth it because after the procedure was finished, he proceeded to execute a world-record 27 second fart.
